Asbestos remains one of the leading causes of work-related death in the UK. Many buildings constructed before 2000 may contain asbestos-containing materials (ACMs), and disturbing them can release dangerous fibres into the air.
This Asbestos Awareness course provides essential knowledge for anyone working on or around buildings where asbestos may be present. It explains how to recognise potential ACMs, understand the risks of exposure, and follow correct reporting and stop-work procedures.
Designed for UK construction and maintenance environments, this course supports safer working practices and helps employers meet their duty to manage asbestos risks.
Important:
This is an awareness-level course. It does not qualify learners to work on, remove, or disturb asbestos-containing materials. Licensed training and certification are required for that type of work.
By the end of this module, learners will be able to:
• Explain what asbestos is and why it was widely used in construction materials
• Identify common locations where asbestos-containing materials may be present
• Describe the health risks associated with asbestos exposure
• Understand the legal responsibilities of employers, dutyholders and workers
• Apply the “Stop, Cordon, Report” protocol when suspect materials are encountered
• Recognise the importance of consulting the asbestos register before starting work
By the end of this module, learners will be able to:
• Understand the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and Regulation 4 Duty to Manage
• Identify the responsibilities of dutyholders, employers and contractors
• Explain the purpose and use of asbestos surveys and the asbestos register
• Describe safe systems of work for managing asbestos risks on site
• Recognise when to apply the Stop Work protocol where information is missing or conditions change
• Understand how site management systems support lawful asbestos compliance
By the end of this module, learners will be able to:
• Recognise common asbestos-containing materials used in buildings and infrastructure
• Identify activities that may disturb asbestos and release fibres
• Understand trade-specific risk zones and exposure triggers
• Apply practical avoidance controls to prevent disturbance
• Identify prohibited practices such as dry sweeping and uncontrolled power tool use
• Follow correct stop-work and escalation procedures when suspect materials are discovered
By the end of this module, learners will be able to:
• Recognise situations that may lead to accidental asbestos disturbance
• Apply immediate response procedures including cessation of work and site isolation
• Understand the importance of preventing secondary exposure
• Follow escalation procedures to supervisors and competent specialists
• Identify when specialist asbestos contractors must be involved
• Understand reporting obligations including site records and RIDDOR requirements
By the end of this module, learners will be able to:
• Understand the boundaries of asbestos awareness training and operational competence
• Apply the six-step pre-task asbestos safety check process
• Verify asbestos register information before beginning work
• Identify stop-work triggers and escalation requirements
• Recognise behavioural risks such as assumptions and unsafe practices
• Apply safe task planning principles aligned with HSE guidance and CAR 2012

6 questions answered
Anyone working in construction, maintenance, refurbishment, demolition, or facilities management who may encounter asbestos-containing materials during their work.
No. This is an awareness course only. Removing or working directly with asbestos requires licensed training and specialist certification.
Yes. The course supports awareness aligned with UK asbestos regulations and employer duties to manage asbestos risks.
ACMs are materials that contain asbestos fibres, commonly found in insulation, ceiling tiles, pipe lagging, textured coatings, cement products, and other building materials used before 2000.
Stop work immediately, prevent further disturbance, and report the issue to your supervisor or responsible person in line with site procedures.
Many employers refresh asbestos awareness training annually or as part of ongoing safety updates.
Practical awareness to prevent accidental exposure
What asbestos is and why it was widely used
The health risks linked to asbestos exposure
Common locations of asbestos-containing materials (ACMs)
How to recognise materials that may contain asbestos
The importance of asbestos surveys and registers
Legal duties and employer responsibilities
What to do if you suspect asbestos is present
Stop-work and reporting procedures
Preventing accidental disturbance during maintenance and refurbishment
Asbestos exposure can cause serious long-term health conditions, including asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma.
Many workers are exposed accidentally due to lack of awareness. This course strengthens understanding, improves hazard recognition, and supports safer decision-making on site.
It helps:
Reduce accidental fibre release
Improve compliance with UK asbestos regulations
Protect workers during refurbishment and maintenance work
Strengthen workplace training records
Upon successful completion of this course and passing the final assessment, learners will receive a:
Certificate in Asbestos Awareness and Workplace Compliance
This certification confirms that the learner has demonstrated knowledge of:
• Identification of asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) in workplace and construction environments
• Health risks associated with asbestos exposure including mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis
• Legal responsibilities of employers, workers and dutyholders under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012
• Safe systems of work including consultation of the asbestos register and risk recognition in pre-2000 buildings
• Operational controls to prevent disturbance and fibre release during maintenance or construction activities
• Emergency response procedures for accidental asbestos disturbance and uncontrolled fibre release
• Site management responsibilities, escalation procedures and lawful compliance requirements
• Competence in applying asbestos awareness principles to maintain safe working practices
The certificate supports workplace safety compliance, health and safety training requirements, and evidence of competence for individuals working in environments where asbestos risks may be present.
