CITB Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS)

CITB SMSTS is the Site Management Safety Training Scheme, a five-day course in the Site Safety Plus suite for construction site management responsibilities.

It is intended for people who hold, or are about to hold, site management responsibilities, including planning, organising, monitoring and controlling construction work.

The full course requires at least 37.5 hours over five days. Breaks are not included in these hours.

Attend 28 and 29 November, 5 and 6 December, and 12 December 2026. All five dates form one complete batch.

No. This is a complete five-day CITB SMSTS course. You must be available for all five scheduled dates.

Yes. Learning takes place live with a tutor, course activities and assessment; it is not a self-paced recorded course.

CITB SMSTS addresses management responsibilities. CITB SSSTS is the separate two-day course focused on supervisory responsibilities. Choose the programme appropriate to your role.

SSSTS is not a formal prerequisite. CITB recommends it for those without previous health and safety management experience. Discuss your experience with the provider before booking if unsure.

There are no formal entry qualifications, but you should hold, or be about to hold, a site management role. Previous health and safety knowledge is recommended.

You need spoken and written English suitable for site management discussions, course materials, exercises and assessment. Contact the administrator before booking if you need guidance.

Follow the identification requirements in your joining instructions and have valid ID available. Ask the administrator before the course if you are unsure whether your ID is acceptable.

Yes. Full attendance across all five days and completion of the required learning and assessment are necessary for certification.

Topics include management duties, health and safety law, CDM, risk assessments, site setup, hazards, occupational health, safety behaviours, welfare and environmental matters.

You will complete course activities and trainer review, together with the required end-of-course examination. Your tutor will explain the current assessment requirements.

No. You must fulfil the attendance and assessment requirements before certification can be awarded.

The certificate is valid for five years. Arrange the appropriate refresher before expiry to maintain certification.

CITB states that the refresher must be completed before expiry. If you allow certification to expire, you will need to take the full course again.

Previous experience may help you learn, but it does not replace the full attendance and assessment requirements of this CITB SMSTS course.

Prepare a suitable computer or laptop, camera, microphone, sound and reliable internet connection. Test access in advance and follow your joining instructions.

You need to be present in a suitable quiet environment, able to participate safely and concentrate fully. Do not attend while driving or carrying out work tasks.

No. Certification does not automatically issue a CSCS card. The relevant card scheme has its own occupation, qualification and test requirements.
