What Is the CITB Test for a CSCS Card?
The CITB test is the Health, Safety and Environment test, often shortened to the HS&E test. You need to pass it before you can apply for almost any CSCS card.

How Much Does the CITB Test Cost in 2026?
CITB increased the price of the test to £23.50 per attempt from 1 April 2026. This applies to all three test types and is paid directly to CITB when you book.
The fee is non-refundable if you fail, so every retake costs another £23.50 on top of your original attempt. Some older guides still quote the previous £22.50 fee, so it is worth double-checking the price at the point of booking on citb.co.uk.
Once you pass the test, the CSCS card application fee is a separate £36, paid to CSCS rather than CITB. A first-time card now costs roughly £59.50 in total once both fees are added together.
