What Is a CSCS Card?
A CSCS card is proof that you have the right training and qualifications to work safely on a UK construction site. CSCS stands for Construction Skills Certification Scheme, and it is the body that issues the card.
Holding a CSCS card is not a legal requirement under UK law. In practice, most major contractors will not let you on site without one, so it works as a required credential even without being written into legislation.
What Do You Need Before You Apply?
You need two things before you can apply for a CSCS card. The first is passing the correct CITB Health, Safety and Environment test for your role. The second is holding the right qualification for the card you want, such as an NVQ, SVQ, apprenticeship certificate, or a recognised health and safety awareness course.
Which CITB Test Do You Need?
The test you sit depends on your role. Labourers and trainees usually sit the Operatives test, supervisors sit a Specialist test, and managers or professionals sit the Managers and Professionals test.
There are exemptions worth knowing. Republic of Ireland SOLAS cardholders do not need to sit the Operatives test, though they still need the Managers and Professionals test for supervisory roles. Apprentices are not required to pass the test before receiving their card, since they complete it as part of their apprenticeship.
Which Qualification Do You Need?
Entry-level cards usually need a short health and safety awareness course. Skilled trade cards need an NVQ or SVQ at the right level for your trade. Management cards need a higher-level NVQ, SVQ, or an approved degree.
If you are applying with an overseas qualification, this route works differently. You need to get your qualification verified through Ecctis, formerly known as UK NARIC, before CSCS will accept it.
What Types of CSCS Card Are There?
CSCS cards are colour-coded, and each colour matches a different level of experience or qualification. Knowing which one fits your situation helps you plan the right route.
Green Labourer Card
This is the entry point for most people new to construction. It requires a Level 1 Health and Safety Awareness course plus the Operatives test.
A recent change affects how long this card lasts. New applicants now get a two-year Green Labourer card rather than the five-year card given in the past. The longer five-year card is now earned through proven time working in the industry, so it is worth checking the current terms directly with CSCS before you apply, since guidance on this point still varies across sources.
Red Trainee Card
This card suits people working toward an NVQ or apprenticeship. It shows you are in training rather than fully qualified yet.
Blue Skilled Worker Card
This card is for tradespeople who hold a relevant NVQ or SVQ at Level 2. It is one of the most common cards on site.
Gold Supervisor and Black Manager Cards
Gold cards suit supervisors, and usually need a higher-level NVQ plus the Specialist test. Black cards suit managers, and need a Level 5 NVQ or SVQ plus the Managers and Professionals test.
White Academically or Professionally Qualified Cards
White cards suit engineers and professionals with a construction-related degree or membership of an approved professional body. Approved bodies include ICE, CIOB, RICS, RIBA, IStructE, and CABE.
How Do You Apply for a CSCS Card?
The quickest way to apply is through the My CSCS app. You upload a photo of your qualification certificate, and the app recommends the right card based on what you submit.
You will need proof of identity, such as a passport or driving licence, along with your CITB test result and your qualification certificate or proof of registration. Once approved, you can access a digital version of your card straight away through the app.
Employers applying on behalf of staff use a separate route called CSCS Online, rather than the individual My CSCS app. This is designed for employers managing several applications at once.
Do You Still Need a Physical Card in 2026?
Not really. Most UK construction sites now accept a digital CSCS card through the My CSCS app, checked in real time using the CSCS Smart Check system.
A physical card is still issued after your application is approved, but it now works mainly as a backup. Some smaller sites without digital systems in place may still ask to see it, so it is worth carrying both where possible.
How Much Does a CSCS Card Cost?
The CSCS card application fee is £36, paid directly to CSCS. This is separate from the CITB test fee, which you pay when you book your test.
The CITB test fee increased from 1 April 2026. Always check the current price directly on citb.co.uk before booking, since some guides online still show the older figure.
How Long Does a CSCS Card Last?
Most CSCS cards last five years before renewal. As noted above, new Green Labourer cards are now an exception, starting at two years rather than five.
To renew, you generally need a fresh CITB test pass and, depending on your card type, proof that you still hold or are working toward the right qualification. It is worth starting your renewal before your card expires, since a lapsed card can mean extra steps to prove your experience again.
What Should You Do Before Applying?
Start by working out which card matches your role and experience. The CSCS card finder tool on the official CSCS website is the quickest way to check this.
Once you know your card type, book the correct CITB test and gather proof of your qualification. TrainifyHUB's construction site safety awareness course is a useful starting point if you are new to site safety and want a solid foundation before sitting your CITB test.
If you want to check your readiness before booking the real test, TrainifyHUB's CSCS health and safety operative mock test gives you a realistic idea of where you stand.
